The Republic of Cyprus is a presidential representative democratic republic, with the President of Cyprus acting as both head of state and head of government. He is also head of the multi-party system, and is given Executive power.
Federal legislative power is vested in both the President and the House of Representatives.
The House of Representatives has 59 members who each serve a five year term, 56 members by proportional representation and 3 seats for observer members representing the Maronite, Latin and Armenian minorities. There are 24 seats are allocated to the Turkish community, but they remain vacant.
The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
The separatist Turkish Cypriot hold power in the northern one-third of the country, but are not recognized outside of the country as legitimate.
