The Grenadines are a Caribbean island chain of over 600islands in the Windward Islands. They are divided between the island nations ofSaint Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. The average sea temperature is 25degrees Celsius in February and 28 degrees Celsius in September. Grenadines dryseason runs from November to May and the rainy season from June to October withan average annual rainfall of just 100 mm (4 inches). Hurricane season is fromJune to October (most storms pass north of the Grenadines. The last direct hitwas in 1955). Agriculture, dominated by banana production, is the mostimportant sector of this economy. The services sector, based mostly on agrowing tourist industry, is also important. Recent growth has been stimulatedby strong activity in the construction sector and an improvement in tourism. The continuing dependence on a single crop represents the biggest obstacle tothe islands' development; tropical storms wiped out substantial portions ofcrops in both 1994 and 1995. There is a small manufacturing sector and a smalloffshore financial sector. The GDP is growing at an annual rate ofapproximately 4%. Economic growth slowed slightly in 2007 after reaching a 10year high of nearly 7% in 2006, but is expected to remain robust, hinging uponseasonal variations in the agricultural and tourism sectors and a recentincrease in construction activity. This lower-middle-income country isvulnerable to natural disasters - tropical storms wiped out substantialportions of crops in 1994, 1995, and 2002. In 2007, the islands had more than200,000 tourist arrivals, mostly to the Grenadines. There is an establishedoffshore banking industry on the island and companies such as Argon LTD., St.Vincent and the Grenadines National Bank and St.Vincent Trust Service can provide you with essential information for thesetting up of companies and trusts. The average price for properties in the islands is US$2,300per square meter (sq. m.), according to Global Property Guide research. Foreignersneed to acquire an Alien Land Holding License before buying property.
