The Kingdom of Denmark, commonly known as Denmark, is acountry in the Scandinavian region of northern Europe. It is the southernmostof the Nordic countries. The mainland is bordered to the south by Germany;Denmark is southwest of Sweden and south of Norway. Denmark borders both theBaltic and the North Sea with a climate that is temperate; humid and overcast;mild, windy winters and cool summers. With a population estimated around 5.5million, Denmark is also a member of NATO and the European Union, having joinedthe European Economic Community in 1973. From 2006 to 2008, surveys ranked Denmark as "thehappiest place in the world," based on standards of health, welfare, andeducation. In the 2008 survey, the Global Peace Index ranks Denmark as thesecond most peaceful country in the world, after Iceland. In 2008, the capitaland largest city, Copenhagen, was ranked the most livable city in the world by Monocle magazine. The Danish economy has in recent years undergone strongexpansion fueled primarily by private consumption growth, but also supported byexports and investments. This thoroughly modern market economy featureshigh-tech agriculture, up-to-date small-scale and corporate industry, extensivegovernment welfare measures, comfortable living standards, a stable currency,and high dependence on foreign trade. Denmark has a GDP per capita higher thanthat of most European countries, and 15-20% above that of the United States.Denmark is one of the most competitive economies in the world according toWorld Economic Forum 2008 report, IMD, and The Economist. According to rankingsby OECD, Denmark has the least financial regulation in EU-15 countries and alsoone of the least regulated product markets. Denmark is home to many multi-national companies.International companies such as CSC, Dell, Microsoft and Nokia have placedlarge global business centers in Copenhagen. The area is also becomingincreasingly attractive to overseas tourists who are looking for alternativesto Mediterranean destinations. Therefore, cottages in coastal locations canoffer both an attractive second-home option and prosperous buy-to-let market.
