Anjouan is one of three main islands making up the Union of the Comoros. (The fourth Comoran island is Mayotte, a French territory). Its capital is Mutsamudu and its population as of 2006 is about 277,500. The total area of the island is 424 sq. kilometers (163 sq. mi.). Since independence from France in 1975, Anjouan and the Comoros have had a turbulent history. The Comoros suffered numerous military coups and was controlled for some time by the infamous French mercenary Bob Denard, during which time the country received support from the apartheid government in South Africa. In 1997 Anjouan declared independence from the Comoros and set itself up as an offshore financial centre. It did have some success in attracting offshore banks and insurance companies of questionable reputation and quality. The offshore sector soon, however, feel victim to internal squabbling between Frenchman Fabien Lecler and a Chinese entrepreneur Dr Johnny Hon who both claimed the rights to operate the offshore centre on behalf of the government. In March 2008 Anjouan was invaded by a joint African Union task force, which was succesful in its mission of ousting the self-appointed President of the island, Mohamed Bacar. It remains to be seen what will become of Anjouan's plans to become the "Switzerland of the Indian Ocean." Offshore World resources for Anjouan:
